Laboratory test
Two common laboratory tests can be done to check blood sugar levels. These are:
- Fasting blood glucose level test. This involves assessing blood sugar levels after an overnight fast. Normal levels are 6.0 mmol/L or less, while anything above 7.0 mmol/L is considered a sign of diabetes. Blood sugar levels between 6.0 mmol/L and 7.0 mmol/L are indicative of pre-diabetes.
- The oral glucose tolerance test. This test examines how quickly your body clear sugar from the blood. After an overnight fast, a high sugar concoction is consumed and a blood glucose test is done two hours later to check sugar levels in the blood. Normal levels are less than 7.8 mmol/L, while anything above 11.1 mmol/L is indicative of diabetes. Pre-diabetes is suggested by blood sugar levels between 7.8 mmol/L an d 11.1 mmol/L.
